Cisco 1600 Series routers are aimed specifically at small branch offices and small businesses, offering flexible, modular design for WAN, advanced security features, end-to-end quality of service (QoS), integrated data service unit/channel service unit, and WAN bandwidth optimisation.

- Connections via ISDN, asynchronous serial and synchronous LAN to WAN connectivity via serial connections
- Supports Frame Relay, leased lines, Switched 56, Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS), and X.25.
- One slot for a WAN interface card, for flexibility in choosing WAN connections that the router supports
